Session 2's over!

Actually, it's been over for about a little less than a week now. I'm happy with the results of my calc class but I don't know about Nut 10 yet. Hopefully it went well. I don't care. I don't ca-a-a-a-a-are, I don't ca-a-a-a-a-a-are.

Dropped off my grandma and my aunt at SFO today with my mom and Hanna. Dang, I love that airport. I wish I could work there, that'd be so fun! It was so cute, halmonee had this teeny tiny suitcase with just clothes lol. They're only staying for a week but it will be a week full of F-U-N!

Anyway last Thursday, while I was studying for my final I decided to check my e-mail and I got one from my mom! It said

On another note, I miss Primero Grove so much! And as much as I hate to admit, I miss living with Shasta too... UGH I don't want school to start!!!!

Summer Session 2

I'm going to head to sleep soon but I just wanted to post an entry because I haven't done so in a while. Summer school started a few days ago and so far it's been good. I only missed 3 classes... hehe just kidding. I missed zero! I actually like going to my classes. Calc isn't so bad and my nutrition class is pretty interesting. The nutrition professor has really cut arms. She must have taken some enhancements or something... I dunno. The apartment that Shasta and I got is pretty nice; we have the entire place to ourselves (2 bedroom, 1 bath) and we're only paying $195 each! Crazy good deal. And we don't have to pay for utilities so "use and abuse!"

Today after Shasta left for home, I went to hang out with Karen at the colleges and I got to see a lot of people for the first time this summer. It made me reeaally happy and then Karen and David came over and we just played at my place.

Yesterday was the first time Shasta and I actually cooked something at our place. Charles brought over cooking utensils from his place and we made curry and 유부초밥. It was hella good. It made me miss home all the more! But, no worries! I'm going back home after my class tomorrow. Um yeah that's all for today. I'm going to sleep now!

Dude my vegetarian diet is hella hard. I accidentally had chicken today hahah... anyway my brother and I are holding up pretty well while our mom's gone but I miss her a lot. Umm summer's been pretty productive/fun and I'm glad I'm not wasting it away. I have to go back to school in a couple weeks :( dammit! I got a new student for Summer Academy and she hellof has a smart mouth. But I'm starting to warm up to her and I think at least one of my kids cry every single day...muahaha

Oh and one of my kids, David, said:

Summer is...

Relaaaaxing... well, for the most part. Summer Academy wears me out but it's still fun. Beach on Saturday and river rafting on Sunday?! I'm excited :). Oh man, I don't even want to think about going back to school for summer session in August. We're going to Silliman Center tomorrow for the Summer Academy field trip. I hope no one dies... haha dang I have some baaaad memories from that place.

Finals Week

So...

There are only two more days left of my freshman year in college but those two days are filled with more work than I've ever had before. I'm currently at Regan Main right now trying to study but I keep getting distracted. Haha that's a funny word... distracted. I wonder if anyone ever gets tracted. Lol in case you didn't know, that's from The Simpson's. I just had a burst of excitement because school's almost over... only to be followed by a long, downslope of depression because of all of the work I have left to do. Ugh I hate finals. I had my first one today... BIO. It was pretty freaking hard so we'll see how that went probably by tomorrow. I can't believe it's already 2:25 AM. I feel like my time is so limited! Ack okay back to studying.

I'm in Jaechan's room right now charging my laptop because my charger broke :(
I heard it was hella expensive... AKSDFJ;AL the weather here's so nice.. it's always above 80 at least! I can't wait for summer session when it's scorching HOT! Yum yum I had breakfast with Lauren today. I'm going to miss DC food so much next year. I was even thinking about buying swipes but it seems like a huge waste of money... mm anyway I'm going back home for the memorial day weekend and we're going hiking! It's going to be so hot but I'm excited!

Trippayyy

My friend, Curtis, just sent me this and I thought it was pretty trippy. The idea's nice but it's more weird than it is anything else. It's pretty amazing to think of how much time it must have taken him to create this. I personally would have probably stopped working on it within the first five seconds of the video. One more day of finals and then HOME! I can't wait to go back to Korean food, Yoswirl, driving, family time (i.e. bugging hongmin), high school friends, my room! The list goes on. Plus I'm getting my braces tightened which means I get to change the colors again. Which colors should I choose this time? Anyway, spring quarter's almost here and I'm so excited! I always say this but I love the weather here.

Shinhee and I have been trying to keep up with the World Baseball Classic which is always exciting. They beat Japan last night 4-1. :)

I wish I could write something more meaningful, or at least something that gets your mind thinking, but I'm too lazy today. Come tomorrow, I'll have a crapload of philosophical, profound, and inspirational thougths/ideas that will hopefully spark some kind of discussion amongst you all. But in the meantime, get your minds pondering on this, mo-farker:

I'm bored!

This is so bad but I can't consistently study. Good thing tomorrow's final is for one of my easier classes. Animal science is the one I have to worry about! The library is so packed right now. And I just got this sudden urge to play Blockles but. I. Must. Refrain. From. That. ADDICTING. Game. (at least for now). I got hella good by the way so if there are any challengers, feel free to try and beat me. Ugh, okay back to studying. Gosh the weather in Davis is so nice today but I'm stuck inside. Okay no more complaining! Haha I didn't know this but there are "study cages" at our library. Like an actual cage; it's fenced off and it fits one person and someone locks you in and takes the key until you finish studying. I thought that was kind of scary but smart at the same time. I'd probably be on facebook the entire time though.

Look what I found!

So I completely forgot about the blog that Ms. Piekarski had us make in Econ. From now on, instead of current events, this blog will consist of my thoughts, likes, dislike, and whatever else I can fish out of my brain. Sorry, I don't have much to contribute to the internet world so if you're not interested, don't read. I tried writing in a diary before but I can't keep up probably because I get sick of writing... although writing out my thoughts on paper would help me improve my penmanship. Anyway, that's it for now, I have to go back to studying because it's finals week! Eep. Oh and please disregard the previous blogs they were just assignments for my econ class.

6 People Die in NIU shooting

It seems like every week, we hear about a new tragedy or shooting that happens in schools, homes, malls, etc.

Yesterday, on February 14, 2008, a man walked onto a stage in the lecture hall of Northern Illinois University and began firing at the teacher and students. This man was a former student at the school and majored in sociology. Police found no motive for his actions. Sixteen people were wounded and six people died in this tragedy; four at the school, including the shooter, and two others at the hospital. The teacher was hurt but was immediately taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. One of the students, Edward Robinson, said that the shooter appeared to be targetting students in a certain section of the lecture hall.

All classes were cancelled on Thursday and shockingly, there were three other school shootings this week prior to this one. Accoriding to CNN, the security around the campus had increased after finding threats and commentary about last year's Virginia Tech incident on the bathroom walls. However, there was no proof that this had anything to do with Thursday's event.

6 People Die in City Hall Shooting

Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town southwest of St. Louis and is usually peaceful and quiet. However, on Thursday, February 7, 2008, a man named Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton ran into City Hall during a council meeting and began shooting. The meeting had just begun at 7 pm with about 30 people in the room. Six people were killed and others were injured before the police shot him as well. First, he killed one man/officer outside of city hall and then went inside and shot another person before he began shooting continuously. The mayor, Mike Swoboda, was critically injured and was rushed to the intensive care unit of St. John's Mercy Hospital. According to Janet McNichols, a reporter covering the meeting at the time of the shooting, the gunman entered the room and began yelling about shooting the mayor while walking around and firing. He shot Officer Tom Ballman in the head during this time.

Although the motives for the shooting remain unclear, McNichols said that Thornton had disrupted many other meetings prior to this one. Thornton was known for his outrageous comments during other meetings and even mayor Swoboda said that his encounters with Thornton were, "one of the most embarrassing situations that I have experienced in my many years of public service." Even though the council were considering banning Thronton from future meetings, they decided against it. He was also arrested twice before and convicted for disorderly conduct.

Demi-Lee Brennan's Transplant Makes Medical History!

It's amazing what the human body can accomplish!

In Australia, a fifteen year old girl named Demi-Lee Brennan received a liver transplant when she was nine years old. At the time, she was dangerously ill with liver failure. What is truly remarkable about this story is that normally, when a person first receives a transplant the human body rejects anything foreign because it does not recognize the organ. However, in Demi-Lee's case, the doctors have found that only 9 months after the transplant, her body had totally adopted the donor's immune system after stem cells from the new liver migrated to her bone marrow. Not only that, Demi-Lee's blood type also changed to the same as the donor's blood type. This case is the first of it's kind in medical history.

Doctors and scientists are now trying to apply what happened in Demi-Lee's case to other patients who are to receive transplants as well. There is no solid explanation for this miracle but there are theories. One theory is that Demi-Lee's immune system was so weak that the stem cells migrated to the bone marrow and proliferated. Brennan hasn't taken any anti-rejection drugs for about four years now and her liver is functioning normally. There are also no symptoms of the immune cells of the donated liver attacking the host.

Stem Cell Research

Although it is a breakthrough in finding new treatments and cures for diseases, stem cell research has created a lot of controversy in our world.

On Thursday, January 17, 2008, scientists in California produced embryos that are clones of two men. What was amazing about this was that the embryos were made with ordinary skin cells. The cloning process is done by inserting DNA into a human egg. Then when the egg gets to be about five days old, they extract the stem cells from it. The scientists took skin cells from Dr. Samuel Wood, who is a co-author of the new paper and chief executive of Stemagen Corp. in La Jolla, California, and another volunteer. The scientists produced three embryos with DNA that matched the men’s. It was confirmed that they were human clones by further testing of the DNA.

There are many people who oppose this however. They say that we do not have the right to create humans for the sole purpose of destroying them in order to help others. Richard Doerflinger, spokesman for U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that as a scientific advancement, the new study and findings will be “very limited.” Due to these protests and objections, scientists have taken on a new method to achieve stem cells. This new process directly turns skin cells into stem cells but it has a greater possibility of cancer for the person receiving the tissues.

Anderson and McEnroe Plead Not Guilty

On December 24, 2007, a couple from Washington, Michele Anderson and her boyfriend, Joseph Thomas McEnroe, walked into the home of Michele Anderson's parents and shot them both. Knowing that Michele's brother, his wife, and their two children would arrive soon, the couple, both of whom are 29, hid the bodies in a shed. When the rest arrived for Christmas Eve celebration, Anderson and McEnroe shot and killed them all. When McEnroe shot the two children, he apologized to them and then shot them both in the head. They stated that the reason for killing the children was to conceal their identities. Both of them were charged with six counts of first-degree murder. After the shooting, Anderson and McEnroe fleed to Canada but returned the next day and were taken into custody.

Then on January 10, 2008, the couple pleaded not guilty to the murdering of the six family members. Although the motive for killing them was not clear, Anderson said that her brother owed her money and she was upset because her parents didn't take her side. Also, her parents were apparently pressuring her and her boyfriend to pay rent for staying on their property. Joseph McEnroe's mother told the Seattle Times that she had lost contact with her son due to money issues but was shocked to hear that he was arrested for doing such a thing because he a "good Christian."

It truly is sad when the people of a government are being intimidated so much that they can't report that their people are being tortured.

"Come in, you are safe," along with "Long Live the Islamic State," is what was scribbled on the walls of a newly found torture chamber in Iraq. Food wrappers, plastic soda cans, electric wires, chains hanging from the ceilings, swords on the floors, etc. were all found in the dirt floor cell. This room was hidden in Muqdadiyah which is about 60 miles north of Baghdad. Many of the swords, beds, and weapons that were used in the torture chamber are still covered in blood. According to U.S. Army Major General Mark P. Hertling, there were nine graves that contained the bodies of 26 people. Judging from the bodies, it was said that they were about 6-8 months old and the troops said that it was hard to identify them because of the advanced decomposition. This chamber is assumed to have been in use for over a year.

The chamber was found somewhere between December 8-11 when troops conducted an operation and the troops who found the chamber killed 24 people who they thought were terrorists and arrested 37 people who were under suspicion. There was enough evidence to prove that people have been intimidated, tortured, and murdered in this room. They found mines, pipe bombs, grenades, and 130 pounds of homemade explosives. What's also shocking is that the people of the village said that they knew about the torture chamber but were to afraid to report it because they were too intimidated by the extremists.
